The pitfalls of designing t-shirts

I’ve been a designer for awhile now but I’ve never designed apparel before, t shirts and designing them have become quite a hot subject of late with sites like threadless allowing user submission and the lucrative potential of gaining money and fame from having your shirt featured.

Potfest in the pens 2009

On Sunday I attended this years Potfest in the Pens, which took place at Skirsgill Auction Mart in Penrith.

First off I’ll say that this was the first time I’d attended a Potfest event, this one was the last one in the year with other two taking place in May and June. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect since all I had to go by was the photos on the site.

Colour trending for 2010

I recently set up a shop on the crafting network Etsy. For the uninitiated Etsy is a network of shops where handmade or recycled goods are sold from sellers all over the world. Its tag is ‘your place to buy and sell things handmade’ and you could imagine it like ebay but for handmade goods and without the bidding!

On the internet no one can hear you tweet

For those who don’t know Slashdot is a news technology site which reports solely on ‘nerdy’ computer things.

I came across an article yesterday published on the site about Twitter. Twitter is whats known as ‘micro-blogging’, in that your limited to a specific number of characters so theres only so much to be said in so few words.

Where's the craft?

I’ve had this blog awhile now and progress on updating it with new entries is rather slow but I think I’ll take the opportunity just now to try and correct that with a new entry.

Rank – picturing the social order

I recently went to see the latest exhibition at the Northern gallery for contemporary art which is Rank – picturing the social order, 1516-2009.

I also saw this exhibition in Leeds however I wanted to revisit it, make some notes and also compare the differences between the two. Most of the key pieces were still there however others were notable by their absence including ‘Polyopoly’ by AOC Architecture and ‘Posession’ by Victor Burgin. There were some interesting additions to replace these missing pieces but the main difference was the progression through the gallery space.

The environmental cost of VHS

Recently I’ve been cleaning out my room and like many people I have a rather large collection of VHS videos.

At the time they were really expensive items that were the latest technology, today we look back on them as a relic of pre-disk reading technology. They are by modern standards bulky tapes of a low quality which degrade over time.

The quest for SNES gameplay

For a long time now I’ve been the owner of a SNES, sadly my particular console was abandoned when the Playstation came around since then its been out of use.

The other day dusted it off and tried it out, sadly no luck the black screen of death stared back at me from my TV. I then went to the internet and tried to find some way of getting it to work – it was suggested using rubbing alcohol, or surgical spirit on cotton buds would do the trick.

Do Fake blogs harm bloggers?

I’ve been a blogger for a long time – since I was in high school so before 2003 by that point I’d blogged for at least 3 years or more. I might be inclined to say that I’m a bit of a veteran blogger. Back when I was in school very few people I knew had their own website never mind their own blog so owning a website was a rare thing. These days every one and every thing has its own website.

Google Streetview comes to the UK

If you live in the UK its pretty difficult not to have noticed the controversy surrounding Google Streetview. Streetview was released in the UK a few weeks ago with the intention of giving users a kind of 360 degree tour of some major cities. People in the UK have always valued their privacy ever since the introduction of CCTV cameras into city centers and of course some people see the Streetview cars as just another invasion.
