The nature of handmade
So this is the first actual post on my new blog, after many months of staring at latin holding text I’m not satisfied that its far enough down the ‘completed’ line to warrant a posting to the site.
Many people recommend for SEO purposes not to post to your blog on more than one topic, however that is something rather difficult to do due to the train of human thought. Very man against machine.
Talking about machines I’ve been spending more time thinking about the nature of handmade objects. In some of my spare time I’m also a craft potter and when it comes to pottery you create a handmade object the problem is of course that handmade things aren’t perfect. When working with something like clay so many things can go wrong – the constancy of the clay, your attitude to throwing, the dryness of your hands, how skilled you are at throwing.
But somehow when you hand make an object you still come out with something at the end which has been hopefully satisfying to produce and nice to use. It does have imperfections after all it hasn’t been made by machine instead its been done by a real person. Imperfections add character to an object and also the style of the potters throwing also adds this but there is still a need to make things perfect.
Perfection helps to satisfy ourselves as well as other people and thats true regardless of if its a hand thrown mug or a website.
I tend to think too many people loose sight of the fact that websites are in fact made by people. As such they’ll never be truly infallible but as a designer you can only strive for perfection if not ever actually achieving it. I’ve been producing websites since I was in high school (about 13-14) and during that time computers and the internet have changed dramatically. Sometimes I do feel like the personal touch and producing websites for pleasure has reduced as more and more people try to make money out of blogging and the internet.
